Florence Marathon 2025: Everything You Need to Know

Who has never dreamed of excelling in sports, of experiencing authentic moments of glory and of leading an important race?

The Florence Marathon can be the right opportunity to measure ourselves against ourselves, against others and against our limits!

It is the most important running event held in the city.

It is held annually and is run on the last Sunday of November.

The length is the traditional one for every marathon: 42.195 km.

The starting and finishing locations are redefined from year to year, although the most popular remain Piazzale Michelangelo and Piazza San Giovanni.

The Florence Marathon was born in 1984: 850 athletes participated in the first edition.

Today it is second, in terms of popularity, only to the Rome Marathon.

Every year it attracts thousands of participants from all over the world.

Among the historic winners, the Italian Angelo Carosi and the Kenyan Benjamin Kiprotich Korir stand out.

The Florence Marathon 2025 will be held on Sunday, November 30, starting at 08:30.

In 2025, the Florence Marathon will celebrate its 41st anniversary.

To register, you must present your FIDAL membership card, RunCard, RunCard EPS (with a valid Sports Promotion Board card attached), a medical certificate for competitive athletics and a copy of the payment.

Registrations will close on November 15, 2025.

Once registration is complete, the athlete will receive a confirmation email.

On Friday, November 28 and Saturday, November 29, 2025, it will be possible to collect your bib at the Marathon Expo.

The Half Marathon

The Tuscan capital also hosts the Florence Half Marathon throughout the year.

The event is aimed at both professionals and amateurs and is held in the spring.

The 2025 edition is scheduled for Sunday, April 6.

The distance is the classic 21.097 km, with a route that winds through the streets of Florence, touching some of the most beautiful historical locations ever.

The itinerary is almost entirely flat and winds through the streets of the historic center and along the streets of Oltrarno.

For the 2024 edition, Lungarno della Zecca was chosen as the starting point and Piazza Santa Croce as the arrival area.

The route

The route of the Florence Marathon touches the most important streets and squares of the city, giving participants the opportunity to experience a unique emotion, running alongside buildings and monuments appreciated and admired throughout the world.

You will pass through countless locations of great interest. Among these we remember Piazza Duomo, Via Cavour, Piazza S. Marco, Viale Strozzi, Via delle Cascine, Viale degli olmi, Piazza Gaddi, Lungarno Guicciardini, Piazza Frescobaldi, Piazza San Felice, Piazza Pitti, Lungarno dei Medici, Piazza Poggi, Lungarno Cellini, Piazza Piave, Piazza Santa Croce, Via Ghibellina, Piazza Vasari, Viale Malta, Piazza Berlinguer, Viale Fanti, Piazza Alberti, Piazza Ghiberti, Piazza Sant’Ambrogio, Piazza Salvemini, Via Ricasoli, Piazzale degli Uffizi, Piazza Santa Trinita, Piazza della Signoria, Via Calzaiuoli, Piazza Duomo.

The Florence Marathon boasts one of the most beautiful, characteristic and appreciated routes in the world.

The altimetry is practically zero, with the lowest point recorded at 43 meters above sea level and the highest at 65.

Roads closed during the marathon

During the Florence marathon, numerous roads will remain closed to traffic to allow the correct and peaceful running of the race.

The same goes for the Florence half marathon, which will also involve the historic city center and therefore the most important and frequented streets of the capital.

Road closures and parking bans will affect all the streets and squares involved, with a gradual reopening to traffic, defined at the passage of the so-called sweeper truck, which will signal the end of the race and therefore of the bans.

During the entire morning, the historic center, Fortezza da Basso, Oltrarno, Parco delle Cascine, the Campo di Marte area, Lungarni Del Tempio, Colombo and Aldo Moro, the area of the Santa Maria Novella station, Piazza della Libertà, Viale Matteotti, Piazza Beccaria, Piazzale Donatello will be off limits.

Traffic will be ensured through specific connecting roads, including the A1-A11 motorways that will guarantee the connection between the North and South areas of the city.

The Marco Polo Viaduct and the Ponte all’Indiano will always be accessible. Traffic to the Careggi hospital will always be ensured.

Curiosity

The Florence Marathon was born in 1984, with the first edition that saw the participation of 850 competitors who challenged each other on the first Sunday of December under a flood of unique proportions.

Silvano Alisi himself, one of the fathers of the marathon, had to personally block a funeral at the Cascine to let the competitors pass.

The marathon and half marathon route will also touch the square in front of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, or the Duomo of Florence.

In the square, the best will be able to find a white marble slab: this indicates the exact point where, on the night between January 26 and 27, 1600, the golden sphere placed on the dome of the Duomo fell, struck by lightning.
